Dr. Roger Kapoor, a dermatologist, spoke with The Daily Mail to outline what really happens to your skin if you go to bed without washing your face—and why it’s a habit worth breaking.

The Consequences of Skipping Your Nightly Cleanse

According to Dr. Kapoor, cleansing your face at night is essential for removing dirt, pollutants, and leftover skincare or makeup products that accumulate throughout the day. “Without a quick face wash at night, you risk clogged pores, preventable breakouts, and even premature aging,” he explained.

Washing your face helps prevent pore blockage, which is a leading cause of acne. Throughout the day, your skin is also exposed to free radicals—unstable molecules that can damage skin cells and break down collagen, the protein responsible for skin elasticity and firmness.

If left on the skin overnight, these free radicals can penetrate deep into the skin’s surface, accelerating aging and promoting the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. This makes your nightly cleansing routine not just a matter of cleanliness, but also a defense against early signs of aging.

Sleeping in Makeup: A Recipe for Irritation

Going to bed with a full face of makeup exacerbates the problem. Dr. Kapoor warns that doing so increases your risk of skin irritation, inflammation, and chronic conditions such as eczema or excessive dryness.

“As we age, the natural renewal process of skin cells begins to slow down,” Dr. Kapoor noted. This makes proper skincare even more critical over time, as aging skin requires more support to maintain its health and appearance.

If you’re too exhausted or simply unmotivated to wash your face at night, Dr. Kapoor recommends keeping a gentle cleanser in your bathroom for a quick wipe-down. And for those nights when you can’t manage even that, makeup-removing wipes are a reasonable fallback. “They’re not ideal,” he admits, “but they’re better than nothing.”

In short, skipping your nighttime face wash might seem harmless, but over time it can lead to breakouts, irritation, and accelerated skin aging. Establishing a simple, consistent routine—even on your laziest nights—can make all the difference for your skin’s long-term health.
