Hidden Danger: Why You Should Never Shower with Contact Lenses On

Doctors Warn of Severe Eye Infections Linked to Water Exposure

Doctors are urging people who wear contact lenses to remove them before showering, swimming, or even washing their face, due to serious health risks that could lead to permanent vision loss. A report published by The Indian Express highlights the hidden dangers associated with water exposure while wearing contact lenses.

According to Dr. Neha Yadav, a resident physician at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, water from home showers, hot tubs, or swimming pools can contain microscopic parasites such as Acanthamoeba. These microorganisms are capable of infiltrating the eye and causing corneal infections or ulcers, resulting in severe pain and potentially irreversible complications.

Dr. Seemakurthi Sreeram from Sankara Eye Hospital explains that corneal ulcers—damage to the outermost layer of the cornea—are often caused by injury or infection. Contact lens wearers are especially at risk if the lenses cause scratches or become contaminated.

One of the most dangerous outcomes is Acanthamoeba keratitis, a rare but serious eye infection. It is difficult to diagnose because its symptoms often resemble other eye conditions. These symptoms can include extreme pain, redness, sensitivity to light, and blurred vision.

Dr. Sudhakar Putti notes that accurate diagnosis requires specialized testing, such as corneal scraping or tissue cultures. Treatment typically involves anti-parasitic eye drops like chlorhexidine. In advanced cases, surgical intervention or even corneal transplantation may be necessary.

Recommendations for Contact Lens Wearers:

  • Always remove contact lenses before showering, swimming, or washing your face.
  • Clean lenses with the appropriate disinfectant solutions.
  • Store lenses in a sterile and dry case.
  • See an eye specialist immediately if you experience unusual symptoms like redness, pain, or blurred vision.

Early detection and treatment are crucial. Following proper lens hygiene and avoiding water exposure can protect your eyes and preserve your vision.
